$10K gifted to Moreau Heights Elementary School

Moreau Heights

Anonymous gift of $10K brings a burst of holiday cheer to a special education classroom at Moreau Heights Elementary, just in time for #GivingTuesday!!

The surprise gift was presented to Cindy Connlley by the Jefferson City Public Schools Foundation, with Moreau Heights staff & JCPS administrators on-hand to witness. Special Education materials & therapy tools can be very expensive: the donation will help fund future expenditures. This gift is part one of a three gift series which are expected at a later date.

Currently, Mrs. Connelly works with a $400 annual budget for her self-contained special-education classroom with access to some special funding that would assist in covering the costs of physical therapy needs and needs associated with speech and language development.

Mrs. Connelly currently works with six students, none for which communicate verbally. Three of these students are in wheelchairs, one is blind, and another uses feeding tubes. Mrs. Connelly's students are learning to communicate through different methods, such as electronic tablets, pictures or other sensory items. "We have a lot of sensory needs," Connelly said. Along with those needs comes different requirements such as snacks with texture, special equipment that uses lights and/or sounds, and the use of ankle weights. When referring to the gift and what it means to her students, Mrs. Connelly stated, "I want them to have their voice" and " It gives them a chance to communicate." This generous donation will provide countless opportunitites for the students within Mrs. Connelly's program for years to come.  #JCMO #JCStrongerTogether
